O Nosso Futebol
The Portuguese League of Professional Football - LIGA PORTUGAL- presently operates three competitions, which include the participation of 32 teams and 38 professional clubs.
The First League, currently named Liga ZON Sagres, is the premier league in Portugal. It remains unchanged with 16 clubs, with the competition dominated by the "big three" archrivals:
Benfica Full name: Sport Lisboa e Benfica Nickname: the Eagles
FC Porto Full name: Futebol Clube do Porto Nickname: the Dragons
Sporting Full name: Sporting Clube de Portugal Nickname: the Lions
The second tier of Portuguese football, known as SEGUNDA LIGA, has increased the number of clubs from 16 to 22, which will now allow 6 additional "B" teams: Benfica, Braga, Guimarães, MarÍtimo and FC Porto.
All clubs, with the exception of the "B" squads, have participated since 2007-2008 in the Taça da Liga (League Cup), a home-and-away knock-off tournament.
Taça de Portugal (Portugal Cup) is the Portuguese Football Federation's (FPF) annual home-and-away knock-out tournament, whose winner or runner-up is awarded a place in the UEFA Europa League. This competition is open to all levels of senior leagues, amateurs and professional. Last season, Academica from Coimbra, a university town, lifted the trophy for the second time in its history. Their first Cup Championship was back in 1939, seventy-three years ago!
